Better Know a Bird: The Wild and Kinky Mating Rituals of the Crested Auklet

An undisturbed Crested Auklet courting pair (male on right, female on left - identifiable by their differing bill shape). Photo: Ian L. Jones

A Crested Auklet colony during the summer is a feast for the senses. It’s loud, with hundreds or thousands of birds clattering and squawking. Each bird is a visual spectacle: Decked out in dusky gray, they look like five-year-olds who broke into Mom’s makeup, with orange Joker smiles, extravagant white eye plumes, and gravity-defying feather crests. And then there’s the smell—a bright tangerine scent so fragrant that researchers can sniff out the birds’ colonies, which are found on islands off Alaska’s coast, from more than a hundred yards away...http://www.audubon.org/news/better-know-bird-wild-and-kinky-mating-rituals-crested-auklet

Ralph Steadman’s Illustrations for George Orwell’s Animal Farm (1995)

By

In 1995, Ralph Steadman added his illustrations to a 50th anniversary issue of George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Thanks to the excellent Maria Popova, we can see a few of them.

As Maria notes, the book features Orwell’s unpublished preface to the original edition. Called The Freedom of the Press, it’s a crackling read. We’ve included it in full...http://flashbak.com/ralph-steadmans-illustrations-for-george-orwells-animal-farm-1995-381695/

Huge, homely mastiff named Martha wins world's ugliest dog

PETALUMA, Calif. (AP) — Martha is big, ugly, lazy and gassy. And a world champion.

In a competition annually dominated by the old, the tiny, and the hairless, the 3-year-old, 125-pound Neapolitan Mastiff used her lollygagging youth to win the 29th annual World's Ugliest Dog Contest.

She was a favorite of the Northern California crowd from the start, often plopping down on her side on stage with her droopy face spread across the ground when she was supposed to be showing off. The judges didn't even need to hear her signature snore to give her the award...http://www.yakimaherald.com/news/weird_news/world-s-ugliest-dog-contest-awards-underdogs-inner-beauty/article_6f616906-f21d-5b09-b925-7b5b665c5ace.html

Vintage Snapshots of Swedish Midsummer looking suspiciously like a Spooky Cult

By Angelika Pokovba

                         image:from Miss Meadows Vintage Pearls

While the annual holiday of Midsummer typically brings to mind flower crowns and smorgasbords of perfectly-arranged picnic food, we’ve dug up some archive photographs from the Midsummers of yore, where the grainy black & white filters and old fashioned 19th century dress suddenly bring a distinctly more ‘culty’ vibe to the whole affair.
The ancient holiday is deeply rooted in Christian religion and pagan tradition, celebrated in Northern Europe every year around the summer solstice when the days never go fully dark in the region. Long and cold winters make sure that the anticipation for this summer holiday even rivals Christmas celebrations...http://www.messynessychic.com/2017/06/21/vintage-snapshots-of-swedish-midsummer-looking-suspiciously-like-a-spooky-cult/

City Council Kills This Man’s 30-Year-Old Tree, His Revenge Will Make Them Deeply Regret It!

By

Hi, I’m an arborist. This means I am a professional in the cultivation, management, and study of trees. I love trees. I think they’re some of the most beautiful, majestic, ancient living beings on our planet.
Today I am here to tell you a story of death, new life, and revenge. Three years ago today, the city council of Redondo Beach California ordered the death of my 30 year old pepper tree. It’s roots had begun to penetrate the pavement in front of my house. The city noticed and issued the death warrant of my tree. They furthermore made me pay for the damages to the sidewalk and for the tree removal...http://joeforamerica.com/2017/06/city-council-kills-mans-30-year-old-tree-revenge-will-make-deeply-regret/

Four men on unicycles only team to finish gruelling 240 km Yukon relay after blizzard

                                                                   Courtesy Nathan Hoover

by Maura Forrest
Not everyone wakes up on a Saturday morning and decides to pedal 240 kilometres through the snow and rain over a mountain pass from the Yukon to Alaska.

But Nathan Hoover and his teammates did.

On unicycles.

Last weekend, Hoover and three other unicyclists were the only team out of more than 1,300 participants to complete the route of the Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay. For the first time in its 25-year history, the race was officially shut down by a freak June blizzard that left the road covered in black ice and several inches of snow.

But the unicyclists were undeterred.

“What else were we going to do that day, right?” said Hoover, 58...http://www.thestarphoenix.com/news/national/four+unicycles+only+team+finish+gruelling+yukon+relay/13458246/story.html

What We Know About the CIA’s Midcentury Mind-Control Project

smithsonian.com

The project, which continued for more than a decade, was originally intended to make sure the United States government kept up with presumed Soviet advances in mind-control technology. It ballooned in scope and its ultimate result, among other things, was illegal drug testing on thousands of Americans.  It wasn’t the first time that the American government “without permission or notice, secretly gathered information on its people,” writes Melissa Blevins for Today I Found Out. But MKUltra has gone down in history as a significant example of government abuse of human rights, and for good reason.

The intent of the project was to study “the use of biological and chemical materials in altering human behavior,” according to the official testimony of CIA director Stansfield Turner in 1977. The project was conducted in extreme secrecy, Turner said, because of ethical and legal questions surrounding the program and the negative public response that the CIA anticipated if MKUltra should become public.

Under MKUltra, the CIA gave itself the authority to research how drugs could: “promote the intoxicating effects of alcohol;” “render the induction of hypnosis easier;” “enhance the ability of individuals to withstand privation, torture and coercion;” produce amnesia, shock and confusion; and much more. Many of these questions were investigated using unwitting test subjects, like drug-addicted prisoners, marginalized sex workers and terminal cancer patients–”people who could not fight back,” in the words of Sidney Gottlieb, the chemist who introduced LSD to the CIA...http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/what-we-know-about-cias-midcentury-mind-control-project-180962836/

BREAKING: Canada passes radical law forcing gender theory acceptance

by Lianne Laurence

OTTAWA, June 15, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — Canada’s Senate passed the Justin Trudeau Liberals’ transgender rights bill unamended this afternoon by a vote of 67 to 11, with three abstentions.

The bill adds “gender expression” and “gender identity” to Canada’s Human Rights Code and to the Criminal Code’s hate crime section. With the Senate clearing the bill with no amendments, it requires only royal assent in the House of Commons to become law.

Critics warn that under Bill C-16, Canadians who deny gender theory could be charged with hate crimes, fined, jailed, and compelled to undergo anti-bias training...https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/breaking-canada-passes-radical-law-forcing-gender-theory-acceptance

The Birth of Canada's Armed, Anti-Islamic 'Patriot' Group

They call themselves the Three Percent. They’re armed, say they’re ready for war on Canadian soil, and experts say they are dangerous.

In front of Calgary City Hall, a couple dozen of them stood shoulder-to-shoulder in an attempt to make an unbreakable human wall. Each of them wore a uniform consisting of a black T-shirt emblazoned with a Roman helmet—a look that wouldn't be out of place in a biker gang. It was a line filled with mostly men, and a few women, who you wouldn't want to go toe-to-toe with in a bar. All of them were white.

Some of the III% (the "three percent," as they call themselves) brought shock canes—a non-lethal weapon that can deliver up to a million volts to the person hit—while others had billy clubs or regular old canes. On many of the shirts was the III%'s credo, "NSA"—Never Standing Alone. Scattered throughout the rest of the square were small groups overseeing the proceedings from an elevated position, as well as III%er members dressed in plain clothes milling about the crowd gathering "intel" on what they considered to be the day's enemy—Antifa, the anti-fascist group...https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/the-birth-of-canadas-armed-anti-islamic-patriot-group

Barack Obama’s Post-Presidential World Tour is Starting to Get Creepy

By Emily Zanotti

Once out of office, former Presidents exit the global scene, preferring—usually—to retire someplace quiet to play golf, give speeches, champion a charity, or do arts and crafts. For some reason, though, President Barack Obama just can’t quite let being President go.

Tuesday night, Obama was spotted dining out with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, just hours after Trudeau flouted current President Donald Trump with a NATO plan that suggests the international community simply wait out the current President to make any changes...https://heatst.com/politics/barack-obamas-post-presidential-world-tour-is-starting-to-get-creepy/

Experts fear spread of rare, lethal Powassan virus

POSTMEDIA NETWORK

                                                             (Postmedia Network File Photo)

The resurfacing of a tick-borne virus that can lead to permanent brain damage is striking fear into the hearts of experts.

Two people in Maine were hospitalized in April after being infected with the Powassan virus, a potentially lethal disease transmitted by ticks that can cause brain swelling and death to 15% of those who contract it.

Fevers, headaches, vomiting, weakness, seizures, and memory loss also are symptoms.

“These things are mutating and it’s becoming a scary world out there,” Dr. Kent Holford, a Lyme disease expert, told Fox News, adding warmer temperatures could be linked to increases in tick-borne illnesses...http://www.torontosun.com/2017/06/09/experts-fear-spread-of-rare-lethal-powassan-virus

Is it time for the truth about UFOs to come out in 2017

By our reporters 28 december 2016

Do you know that song by Phil Collins? “I can feel it, calling in the air tonight” That’s what I like to begin this article with, because we at World UFO Day feel something is in the air. Since December 21st, a lot of interesting turns have been made by the UFO community. Contact has been made, and I don’t mean with aliens, I mean on this planet. The image of UFO believers has made a shift. People around us are opening up to a truth that has been there all along. A lot has happened this year, and we’re asking ourselves out loud: “Is it time for the truth about UFOs to come out in 2017? To make this tendency clear, we have put a few facts together to show you what has set the tone.

Canadian foreign minister: Defending abortion, LGBT is ‘at the core of our foreign policy’

Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland

by Lianne Laurence

OTTAWA, June 8, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — Global abortion access and “sexual reproductive rights” are “at the core” of Liberal foreign policy under Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canada’s minister of foreign affairs told the House of Commons on Tuesday.

Canadian values include “feminism and the promotion of the rights of women and girls,” Chrystia Freeland said in an address laying out Trudeau’s vision for Canada’s international role.

And when more nations adopt those values, the world will be “safer and more prosperous,” she added.
“It is important, and historic, that we have a Prime Minister and a government who are proud to proclaim themselves feminists. Women’s rights are human rights,” Freeland said.

“That includes sexual reproductive rights,” observed the former journalist and second-term Toronto MP who replaced Stephane Dion as foreign affairs minister in January.

“That includes the right to safe and accessible abortions,” added Freeland...https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/canadian-foreign-minister-defending-abortion-lgbt-is-at-the-core-of-our-for
